Server Supervisor - Server and Network Monitoring Software
Server Supervisor monitors the availability of various network resources, from local workstations to web and database servers with distributed architecture. It checks the status of all resource components in a manner that depends on the resource type and monitoring parameters specified by the administrator. The product is configured and administrated with help of a user-friendly web interface, which makes it easy to access from any location on the network over secure SSL connection. Different users can be granted different access rights according to their roles and tasks. It makes the product useful for people responsible for specific resources.
A flexible system is used to specify each situation when the product users should be notified in real time. This can be done not only on faults, but also when the value of a monitored parameter achieves user specified error or warning level or returns back to normal. This feature provides different levels of sensitivity for the system and can help administrators resolve problems proactively. Notifications are sent by email, SMS and instant messenger services. Server Supervisor can also react to specified events by stopping or starting monitoring activities and executing external applications. For example, a web server can be restarted automatically if its failure is detected. It is also possible to plan and schedule monitoring of each resource according to its real work schedule and disable unneeded activities for off hours and maintenance time.
Server Supervisor has a built-in database to store statistical information about all monitor probes. The product includes a statistics analysis component which is targeted at providing a consolidated and descriptive view on the collected information. - The product is easy to setup and manage. To monitor a resource in a particular way the user creates a monitor object. Several monitors can be created for the same resource to check its availability with different methods
- Monitors can be gathered into groups. For example, all monitors created to check various resources corresponding to the same network service can be gathered into one group. This way it is easier to manage them, create dependencies and analyze the statistics
- You can use scheduler to run or stop certain monitors or groups of monitors at any specified time. For example, you can turn off monitoring on weekends or during maintenance of some resources
- Each network resource such as web server can be monitored in a number of ways. You can simply check the availability of the resource in general, or you can check its functionality to a certain extent. So, different types of monitors can be used even for the same type of resource, but almost all monitors are resource-specific
- Network Connectivity monitoring: Ping, Connect, DNS. These types of monitors are used to check the general network connectivity and availability of any network resource
- Web server monitoring: HTTP, HTTP Content, HTTP Transaction, IIS Status, Apache Status, Process. These monitors are targeted on web servers and web applications. They can check availability of a web page, validate a response from a web application, and check status of IIS and Apache web servers
- SQL Server monitoring: MySQL, MSSQL, Oracle. These ones check status of most common database servers
- FTP and mail server monitoring: FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP
- OS resources monitoring: CPU, Free memory, Page file, Free disk space, Network usage, File system. These monitors can gather statistics about the usage of system resources and produce alerts in case of an overload. The monitoring is performed via WMI and SNMP protocols
- Custom resources. You can create your own monitors to check any non-standard network service
- Complex resources can consist of several components. In such cases it is useful to monitor each component separately, so that in case of troubles you would receive a more descriptive notification about the source of the problem
- At any time each monitor can be in one of three states: Ok, Warning and Error. A monitor can change its state after each probe. You can specify the interval between probes and conditions required to switch between states. For example, you can specify normal ping time limit. If a ping monitor returns longer time, it switches to the “warning” state. You can also specify a timeout value that would put it to the “error” state
- The Warning state is useful to identify various bottleneck problems on early stages. If you notice that some monitor switches to that state from time to time and returns back to “Ok”, it may suggest a required hardware upgrade or signal some inefficiency in the system
- The most common action on any problem detection is sending notification to a person responsible for the maintenance of the corresponding resource. Server Supervisor has a flexible notification system. It can send notifications by means of email, SMS and Instant Messengers (ICQ, Yahoo and MSN)
- Messages can be sent to different people and in different form at the same time. For example, it can send SMS message to the network administrator responsible for a resource and duplicate it in email to management
- For each notification you can specify a template that is filled with the actual data. You can choose to add more or less information is the notification. For example, you can specify to send complete info with all system parameters by email and a short notification by SMS
- Server Supervisor has a built-in database to store statistical information about all monitor probes and alerts that take place during the operation of the system. Such information can be represented by very large amount of data which may be hard to deal with in a raw form

- Analysis of the performance and availability of resources during the specified period of time, including analysis of average parameters of the system measured in each hour of the day or each day of the week
- Simple monitor statistics. This report shows the values of a selected monitor during any specified period of time. You can choose the scale to get more or less details
- Resource uptime percentage. For a specified time period it shows the percentage of time the selected monitor was in each state
- Summary by week days and hours. With this type of report you can get average statistics for particular days of week or day hours. For example, you know that your web system experiences highest load on weekdays around 4:00 PM. You can create report for last 5 days for the period between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM to see the average values of CPU load monitor
- Group reports. Resource uptime and summary reports can be created for groups of monitors
- You can specify parameters of reports that you want to receive periodically and Server Supervisor will send these reports to you by email at the specified date and time. For example, you can configure it to send daily reports for a group of monitors controlling your web site at 9:00 AM. This way you will receive the information about last 24 hours every morning
